The band was originally formed by siblings Natália and Matej at the ages of 10 and 16, when they recorded and released three albums of improvised music, becoming a curiosity in their hometown’s underground scene. Their short songs, characterized by naive and catchy melodies, rhythmic collages of various sounds, and dadaist lyrics about sibling love and small-town life, captured the attention of online audiences and Rádio_FM listeners. They even got featured in a commercial for the popular Slovak candy Hašlerky.

After an eight-year hiatus, Alten Kompoten is back, performing new interpretations of their old songs while preserving the spirit of carefreeness and childlike joy. Now led by 26-year-old Matej, the band features a fresh lineup including Erik Ždila (Krstní Otcovia, Digästorcie), Ján Siman (Digästorcie), and Lukáš Obermajer (Zátišie).

“Alten perhaps most nostalgically remind me of the political underground of socialism before 1989. Their absurd yet naive lyrics and minimalist, almost childlike compositions—performed by truly skilled musicians—create an intriguing collage of ideas and unheard sounds that gush with the pure joy of playing and creating. This is what Bez ladu a skladu, Maťkovia, or Ali Ibn Rachid might sound like in 2024.”
