Mayssa Jallad, a singer, songwriter, architect, and urban researcher from Beirut, extends her artistic endeavors beyond her solo project, focusing on the intersection of music and architectural history. As the founder of the indie-pop band “Safar” and through collaborations with various artists, she brings a unique blend of alternative folk and modern Arabic influences. Her commitment to preserving cultural heritage through music aligns seamlessly with her work as an architectural researcher, contributing to a meaningful dialogue about civil peace and historical understanding.
Her concept album, “Marjaa: The Battle of the Hotels,” released in March 2023 by Ruptured Records, stands as a testament to Mayssa’s talent in providing a captivating and thought-provoking musical experience. All lyrics are penned by Mayssa Jallad, and the music is a collaborative effort with Fadi Tabbal. Divided into two parts, “Dahaliz” and “Maaraka,” the album vividly captures the historical events of the 1975 “Battle of the Hotels” during the Lebanese Civil War and its aftermath, presenting a sonic journey through Beirut’s urban landscape.
Part A, “Dahaliz,” nostalgically strolls through the city’s old map, accompanied by musician Youmna Saba. The once-winding corridors, destroyed by development since the 1960s, become the canvas for Jallad’s exploration. Part B, “Maaraka,” embodies the buildings of the battle, narrating the conflict between the Lebanese Front and the Lebanese National Movement. It serves as an educational tool for post-war youth, shedding light on a difficult history. Broaden your horizons by experiencing Mayssa live at SHARPE 2024!
